Antique Rose Alphabet
(chart)
Product No: 730708
Supplier Code: IEFD18-PRT

Designer/Artist: Muriel Brunet Berceville
Our Price: $ 13.99

This monogram alphabet was used as a guide for stitching initials on household linen. Young girls would learn to stitch at school. They would reproduce series of letters and numbers on small canvases, using red thread. Red was not only a symbol of life, if was also a colorfast color that would best resist heavy laundering. These canvases were used as samples and would be transmitted from one generation to another. Together with this alphabet design is an extra "rose wreath chart", a modern pattern created by the designer to accomodate the initials. You can use the monograms and stitch them in the center of the wreath or alternatively stitch a tiny rose. The wreath is stitched over two threads. However the inner part (monogram or rose) is stitched over one thread which creates a very refined effect. Note: letter "I" and "W" are missing from the alphabet. This was current with early samplers where letters “I” and “J” were often merged (as were letters “V” and “W”). A reproduction sampler charted by Muriel Brunet-Berceville.
Number of stitches: 246 x 176 (wide x high) Stitches: Cross stitch

Supplier Code: IEFD46-PRT

Designer/Artist: Muriel Brunet Berceville
Our Price: $ 14.99

This is a remarkable sampler with the most gorgeous border of red poppies running all around the stitched piece. A hare, goat, deer and poppy border adorn this sampler inspired by "Berlin Embroidery". Berlin Embroidery was introduced by a German printer and rapidly spread throughout Europe. Known as "broadsheets" and hand painted for color, this new technique provided striking visual alternatives to existing sampler designs. Most popular themes were flowers, wreaths, baskets, animals and scenes of children playing. Berlin Embroidery was used for both cross stitch and tapestry.

Countryside Reproduction Sampler Dated 1872
(chart)
Product No: 765117
Supplier Code: IEF053-PRT

Designer/Artist: Muriel Brunet Berceville
Our Price: $ 16.99

The original piece, from Muriel Brunet's private collection is an antique sampler that was stitched in 1872 and is of French origin. The piece was originally stitched on canvas using wool and silk threads. Parts of the motif are stitched over one thread, in petit–point, allowing for more detail (cross stitch over one weft and one warp thread). When you look at the backside of the fabric, you can see that the colors used were rather bright. When charting this pattern , Muriel Brunet preferred to pick colors closer to how they appear today, somewhat faded. A few adjustments were made to the composition to allow for symmetry and more regular spacing but the overall “spirit” is very close to the original.

Designer/Artist: Muriel Brunet Berceville
Our Price: $ 13.99

Muriel Berceville describes her work: "Look for the personal details that have been added to this sampler, quite representative of a typical stitching exercise young girls would stitch in the mid 19th century. When charting this design, I tried to match the original colors and stay as close as possible to the original composition though the work of time makes it quite challenging."

Most samplers have the same typical layout: the top part includes an alphabet, the remaining part is decorated with symbols and a pretty border runs all around the piece. The way these young ladies would choose their motifs reflects their moral and religious education as well as their surroundings. There are many references to Christ (heart, M for the Virgin Mary), insects (butterflies), animals (birds, dogs), flowers (carnations, roses).

Here's the Roll-up Organizer Pouch , Muriel Berceville's Sampler inspired cross stitch project in a unique round shape. The pouch has plenty of useful space to accommodate your floss and other necessities. There is an extra pocket inside the lining for scissors and needles, as well as a separate Ort-bag for leftover bits of thread and a matching pinkeep. The pattern features a short poem: Where Needle goes Thread always follows This is the English version of the design, translated from the original phrase in French "Le fil suit toujours l'aiguille". Designer Muriel Brunet specializes in European Reproduction Samplers of which she has a superb collection. This pattern however is an original design created in the manner of an antique alphabet sampler. The delicate rose button motif in particular is exquisitely designed. The explanations for mounting the pouch are extremely detailed and will take you step by step through each stage. The pattern is stitched on 32 ct linen, over 1 thread, using Soie D'alger Silk thread from Le ver à Soie, however you can also substitute DMC floss. A set of two matching floral fabrics is used for the lining and for making the accessories.
